Earth Wasn’t Always Called Earth
This monument to healthy soils takes the form of three stacked spheres, symbolizing the three fundamental layers of soil—topsoil, subsoil, and parent material. Rising like a geological column, the sculpture highlights the hidden yet essential foundation that sustains life above.
Positioned within the zoo, the structure serves as both a landmark and an educational piece, inviting visitors to reflect on the often-overlooked world beneath their feet. Its form speaks to balance, resilience, and the layered history embedded in the land we stand on.
A collaboration with Dr. Martina Modic, Institute Jožef Štefan, and artist Brad Downey
